Denser materials are used for rigid structures that carry heavy loads: basements, frames, bridges. Less dense materials are used where thermal insulating properties are more important (glass wool, bricks). On the other hand, denser materials can be used where good thermal conducting properties are needed: metal heat exchangers, the bottom of an iron.
