Question #129569

A 80-kg stuntman rides his motorcycle on a vertical wall inside a cylindrical structure (Figure 3). Assume that the motorcycle is at 90° with the surface of the wall, the cylinder has a radius of 15 m and that the coefficient of static friction between the tires and the wall is 1.1 Derive and calculate the minimum speed that will keep the motorcycle and rider from sliding down the wall?

a)

"N=\\frac{mv^2}{r}\\\\\\mu N=mg\\\\v=\\sqrt{\\frac{rg}{\\mu}}=\\sqrt{\\frac{15\\cdot 9.8}{1.1}}=11.6\\frac{m}{s}"

b) No. The speed of the motorcycle does not depend on its mass.
