Optical pumping is the best for Nd:YAG laser because this is a solid-state laser and the light produced by a flash tube or a diode laser will be enough to excite the atoms of the medium in the laser and generate laser radiation. This method would not work in gas lasers because the atoms of gas require much more energy to excite. The pumping mechanism used in gas lasers is electrical pumping.
