Answer on Question #65574-Molecular Physics-Thermodynamics

State the relevant laws which are applicable on the following observation of gas.

(1) A balloon shrinks when kept in a cold place.

(2) Pressure of moist gas is higher than that of dry gas.

Solution

(1) The pressure PP inside a balloon is given by (equation of state of ideal gas)

P=nkT.P = n k T.

When temperature decreases, the pressure does too. So the outside atmospheric pressure will shrink the balloon.

(2) The pressure PP in terms of molar mass MM equation (equation of state of ideal gas)

PV=mMRT.P=mMVRT.\begin{array}{l} P V = \frac{m}{M} R T. \\ P = \frac{m}{M V} R T. \end{array}

Since

Mmoist gas<Mdry gas,M_{\text{moist gas}} < M_{\text{dry gas}},

so

Pmoist gas>Pdry gas.P_{\text{moist gas}} > P_{\text{dry gas}}.

Potassium chlorate is often used to generate oxygen gas in high school laboratory. If 183.7g of KClO3 is completely burnt catalytically, what volume of oxygen gas will be obtained at 39 celsius and 1200 torr pressure?
