Question #268110

A student has designed his own thermometer with a temperature scale called S. Here

he has marked the freezing point of water as 30 °S and the boiling point of water as

150 °S. The S scale has 130 divisions.

(a) By drawing a suitable diagram, express the relation (mathematical equation)

between 𝑇𝐶 (temperature in Celsius) and 𝑇𝑆 (temperature in S)

(b) What reading will be shown in S scale when he measures the temperature of an

object at 60°C.

Solution;

(a)

Here;

130 Division=100°c=120°S

If N is the number of division;

1division=1013°c=1213°s1 division=\frac{10}{13}°c=\frac{12}{13}°s

Reading on each scale can be expressed as;

T(°s)=1213N+30T(°s)=\frac{12}{13}N+30

T(°c)=1013NT(°c)=\frac{10}{13}N

(b)

T(°c)=60

60=1013N60=\frac{10}{13}N

N=78N=78

Hence reading on S scale is;

T(°s)=1213×78+30T(°s)=\frac{12}{13}×78+30

T(°s)=72+30=102°sT(°s)=72+30=102°s
