The particles of a gas are widely separated and are only slightly attracted to each other. More time is required for energy to be passed through them because the particles rarely interact and the forces involved are small. The energy of a wave can pass more quickly through liquids and solids because their particles are closely spaced and interact constantly. Particles of a solid are more strongly attracted to each other and the larger attractive forces pass the energy more quickly.
