Question #152938

What is energy in normal zeeman effect.

Expert's answer

When a light source emitting line spectrum is kept in an external magnetic field,the spectral lines emitted by the atoms of the source are split into a number of polarized components.This effect is called Zeeman effect.Normal Zeeman effect that is shown by all lines due to transition between singlet states(S=0) of an atom. The expression of energy is

ΔE=eh4πm(BML)\Delta{E}=\frac{eh}{4πm}\Big(BM_L\Big)

Where e and m are the charge and mass of electron, h is planck's constant ,B is magnetic field and ML is magnetic orbital quantum number.
