Question #106451

A hydraulic press has two pistons, where the diameter of one of them is double that of the other, when the small piston is affected by pressure P, the pressure affects the big piston will be

Expert's answer

The Force should be equal for both pistons, so

PS=constP*S=const

where PP - pressure and SS - square

P1=PP_1=P for small piston

Since D2/D1=2D_2/D_1=2 , then S2/S1=(D2/D1)2=4S_2/S_1=(D_2/D_1)^2=4

Then pressure in big piston will be P2=P1S1/S2=P/4P_2=P_1S_1/S_2=P/4
