When a capacitor is applied with an emf from an external source like a battery , opposite charges deposits on the plates of a capacitor. When two opposite charges are stuck on two parallel plates , there is an existence of net electric field between the plates from positive side to the negative side.
These charges are brought together by external emf or external work. This work done on charges acts as electrostatic potential energy on capavitors.
When the emf is removed, the charges added on capacitor plates is flown away due to electric field causing a net movement of charge called electric current. The current continues to flow till the net charge on the plates become zero. Hence the capacitor acts as a battery or energy storage device in form of electrostatic potential energy.
