Discuss the role and social status of women in precolonial Khoekhoe communities
In the precolonial Khoekhoe communities, women played important roles in production, religion, and politics. They were very active in the public domain; in politics as Princesses, Queen mothers, and regents; and in religion as prophets, diviners, and rainmakers. Gender division of labour was not rigid in precolonial southern Africa as women could crossover to male type duties and sometimes, the sexes complemented each other.
In this regard, women determined their destinies and social class, controlled their labour which was not common in other societies. Further, they controlled their bodies signifying a high social status unlike when men controlled them and decided how to live. Women also participated in trade negotiations even with Europeans clearly showing that their social status was high.
