With numbers we know that x < y if we have that x lies to the left of y on the number line
From this statement it is clear that x lies on the negative side of the number line and y lies on the positive side of the number line. Another way to see x <y uses subtraction is that we know x is negative and y is positive if we add both of these then ultimately we get the subtraction of two numbers x and y.
