Invariant order - The order in which students proceed through the conceptual levels is fixed. To put it another way, a student cannot reach level n without first completing level n-1.
Adjacency - What was intrinsic at the previous level of thought becomes extrinsic in the current level of thought.
Distinction - Each level has its own set of linguistic symbols as well as a network of connections between them.
Separation is the inability of two people who reason at separate levels to understand each other.
