We can classify shapes  as either 2D or 3D.
The 2D shapes are figures that have only length and height. They are known as plane figures, because 2D shapes lie on a flat surface. 
Shapes of this type have area, but they have no volume.


3D shapes have depth as its third dimension and they have volume.
