The perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. Perimeter is measured in units.

The area is the amount of space the inside of the shape takes up. Area is measured in square units.

For example, we have a plant and we want to put up a fence and plant a lawn. We need to know the length of each side of a plant to buy a fence (it is usually sold by meters), it is called perimeter. We also need to know the area of the plant to buy enough grass (it is usually sold by square meters), it is called area.
