Reasoning in Maths is the process of applying logical and critical thinking to a mathematical problem in order to work out the correct strategy to use (and as importantly, not to use) in reaching a solution.
As a junior primary mathematics teacher, it is essential that I must interpret students’ written work, analyze their reasoning, and respond to the different methods they might use in solving a problem and provide adequate feedback so as to make them improve on their mathematical reasoning ability.
In order to help my students improve their mathematical reasoning skills, I will ensure I use the teaching approach I will use in teaching them will be the one that will be about exploring, reasoning and challenging thinking rather than learning rote/abstract rules for calculations and facts.
