Within logical-mathematical knowledge is the process of classification, which represents the first steps towards learning more complex mathematical concepts.
Classification generates a series of mental relations through which children group objects according to similarities and differences, depending on different criteria: shape, color, size, etc.
These relationships are the basis for the construction of logical-mathematical thinking.
Seriation is the ability to group objects based on height, weight, and/or importance.
An example of a seriation exercise would be: children putting objects in order from short to tall, thin to big, small to large whereas an example of classification would be a child’s ability to group specific objects based on color, shape, size, amount.
