A theory is a rational type of abstract thinking about a phenomenon, or the results of such thinking. The process of contemplative and rational thinking is often associated with such processes as observational study or research.

Theories explain how to make public relations more effective for organization and society. Theories provide an understanding of the relationship between actions and events. PR practitioners consider several theories when they make decisions about how they can build a successful relationship with their public. Grunig and Todd Hunt describe four theoretical models for public relations practice that have become starting points for examining how the profession works. The four models are press agentry and publicity, public information, two-way asymmetric, and two-way symmetric. System theory of public relations can be used to coordinate the planning and execution of your public relations activities with other sectors and sections of society since public relations professionals need to assess their environment, intended goals, activities, and input from stakeholders and publics to make the required organizational changes to fit within the environment and achieve a target state of equilibrium.
