A manager, Kinshuk, is in the process of deciding of which of the two persons she will appoint as a
task force leader. The task is to develop a new approach to market an already established product. She has
observed Rishi, who is quiet and reserved and interacts relatively little with his work peers. He is very
bright, a hard worker, and very reliable in doing detailed, structured work. He has never been observed to
express either negative or positive emotions.
The other candidate, Usha, is talkative and outgoing. She interacts easily with others and has a warm,
outgoing style. She is sometimes careless about details and is easily bored with repetitive, routine work.
However, she enjoys solving new problems and makes good decisions in ambiguous situations. She is
very expressive but never let her emotions out of control at work when under stress. The more difficult
the problem, the more she enjoys it.
In your opinion who shall she appoint as a task force leader?
Usha is the most likely to be appointed as the task force leader because she easily gets along with people and has exposed her ways of responding emotionally; therefore, people know her well, especially when solving problems during difficult situations. The leadership position requires a problem solver and controls their emotions like Usha. Besides, she is a good decision-maker in crisis; this is a suitable skill for the position.
