There are two major approaches to motivation which are intrinsic and Extrinsic motivations. Intrinsic motivation is internal it occurs when people are bound to do something out of satisfaction, significance or need. Extrinsic motivation occurs when external factors make the person to do something.
In comparing the two approaches, one has to consider the following;
1) source of reward; Intrinsic motivation involves performing a task because it’s personally rewarding to you while extrinsic motivation involves completing a task or exhibiting a behavior because of outside causes such as avoiding punishment or receiving a reward.
2) Efficiency; Intrinsic motivation is typically a more effective long-term method for achieving goals and completing tasks in a way that makes you feel fulfilled, while extrinsic motivation is helpful in certain situations, it may eventually lead to burnout or lose effectiveness over time.
There are other approaches to motivation such as; physiological, behavioral, cognitive, and social. It is the crucial element in setting and attaining goals and research shows you can influence your own levels of motivation and self-control.
