People communicated mostly through speech and handwritten texts prior to the introduction of the printing press. For the first time, the printing press paused the development of symbols: maps and numbers were established for the first time. The printing press aided communication and knowledge dissemination by speeding up the process. This aided in the development of a more literate public.
