Geert Hofstede studied dimension of culture and came up with the following five categories; identity, power, gender, uncertainty, and time that constitute culture. Cultural value dimensions help us understand culture as they provide us with perspective that we see culture versus our others view it. These cultural dimensions helps us to understand the experiences we have with culture and make these experience less ambiguous and threatening.
Identity:
One advantage of identity is that it defines individuals therefore helping others know how to treat each colleague.
challenge of identity is that when societal conflicts between social identity groups spill over into organizations, leaders face the formidable confronts of attempting to bridge involved parties.
disadvantages of identity is it can support individualism than collectivism.
power:
advantage - unifies individual effort behind the vision of the leader.
disadvantage - People are afraid to give bad news to the boss.
challenge - the ability of power to react to threats and opportunities of the organizations.
Gender:
advantage - well balanced gender constitution defines how workforce will operate.
disadvantage - gender balancing can limit the work capability of the organization.
challenge - Organizations are required to represent women therefore altering aggressive nature of men.
Uncertainty:
advantage - it leads to following of rules prescribed to obtain required result.
disadvantage - it reduces confidence level of the organization leadership.
challenge - to be able to make precise decision or action to the ideal one.
time:
advantage - time shapes how cultures will orient in future.
disadvantage - poor time change withfactor easily mean lack of progress of the organization.
challenge- to convert available space to time to strengthen bonds to better future production.
