1) Diversity in the workplace refers to an organization that intentionally employs a workforce comprised of individuals with a range of characteristics, such as gender, religion, race, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, education, and other attributes. Some of the diversity issues in the workplace include; first, communication which arises when employees are not of the same mother language like English. Second diversity issue is harassment which involves making other minority groups at work feel uncomfortable and can even extend to educational and cognitive discrimination.
Management can handle this diversity issues by making diversity part of the hiring process, examining policies that fight systematic inequality. Further it can create a culture of understanding, empathy, and forgiveness among employees. It is really commendable.
2) Communication issues in the workplace can arise for various reasons, but the most pressing issue is when English isn’t the first language of all employees. Language barriers at work have been found to result in low staff morale leading to employees feeling marginalized and not included in decision-making processes, simply because they aren’t as eloquent at expressing their ideas as native English speakers. Unconscious bias; hiring managers may discriminate against candidates because of factors such as their cultural background, gender, and even the way they dress. It’s a real challenge when trying to increase diversity in tech because if interviewers can’t identify the unconscious bias when it occurs, there’s little they can do to then prevent it.
Thirdly, another diversity issue in the workplace is generation gaps; have different ways of working and therefore age diversity in the workplace comes with its own unique issues. Communication styles, work speeds and even definitions of success may differ depending on what generation a person belongs to. Therefore it’s important to spend time understanding how to accommodate diversity so that people are set up to thrive rather than struggle.
3) Sensitivity issues in the work place involve actions that end up demoralizing workers and hurt employees which may make them offended and sue the organization or the particular person. Racism is one of the most sensitivity issues in the workplace and involves discrimination of an individual due to his/her race, color, or a behavior related to particular race. It involves slurs, unequal treatment of a particular race, and jokes that lower worker’s morale due to his/her race.
Secondly, sexism is yet another key sensitivity issue in the workplace. It involves preferential treatment on a particular gender and unfair treatment of another gender. Both men and women should be treated equally in all areas of work and they should be assumed one is better than the other. Other sensitivity issues include; inappropriate behavior, and harassment. Management should ensure sensitivity issues are handles with keenness and should never be tolerated at all cost. The management should ensure equal treatment to all employees regardless of their race, gender, and any other factor whatsoever.
4) Diversity management is crucial in any organization since it helps all employees understand customers’ needs and act on them diligently. It further improves employees’ enthusiasm and morale making them more efficient and effective in their roles thus increasing productivity in the company.
5) Several changes are currently occurring in the workplace necessitating for better consideration regarding diversity include cross-border employment of different races by considering recruitment over a larger geographical area, organizational culture that puts inclusivity and diversity at the very core of the organization, focusing on the retention rather frequent layoffs.
6) Diversity management is encompassed with many benefits such as increased productivity of the company due to improved morale of the employees, increased creativity among the employees since their self-esteem is no longer lower, companies gain a global impact and lastly improved brand reputation.
7) Some of the challenges that diversity manager face include; communication barriers, cultural barriers, generational and age differences among others.
