The MARS model consists of four variables that are used to predict employee performance and behavior. Internal forces, such as personal values and experiences, determine MOTIVATION, which shapes how people respond to tasks in the workplace, according to the model. Employee ABILITY refers to an individual's personal skills and knowledge that they can apply to a task, whereas role perception refers to how people perceive their function in the workplace. ROLE ambiguity can lead to low employee performance because there is no clear knowledge of work priority due to a lack of clarity in expectations. The SITUATIONAL factors, as defined by the MARS model, are external to the individual, unlike motivation, ability, and role perception, which are all internal to the individual. Employee performance and behavior are all influenced by situational and contextual circumstances that are beyond the employee's control and can have an impact on performance and behavior.
