When Apple received a client order for a product, the order had to go through a paper-based workflow procedure that was passed from department to department, inbox to inbox. The order had to be re-typed several times as it traveled through several departments, which increased the risk of human mistake. Because no official tracking mechanism to alert each department existed, there was no correct account order status. Customers were regularly routed to the company's warehouse for manual research in order to get order status information. Apple has now implemented ERP systems to replace the unreliability of paper-based tracking. ERP software gathers real-time data on the activities and state of various divisions within an organization and makes it available to other areas of the business for productive use. Tim Cook recognized the value of establishing an enterprise sales staff as part of his strategy for increasing iPad sales, particularly to businesses. In 2016, Apple opted to form a strategic alliance with SAP. SAP is an enterprise resource planning software that integrates an organization's major business processes. SAP created a number of unique business applications for iOS devices, iPads, and iPhones, while Apple gained access to SAP's global sales force to assist in the selling of its products to businesses. Apple cooperated with firms such as IBM and Cisco to improve the performance of its products on enterprise networks.
