In an Organizational Culture survey undertaken at Spartan Infotech, one of the key concerns that emerged were the low scores on the fairness parameters. Employees at Spartan believed that managers played favorites and the overall organization culture was infested by politicking and backbiting. The Chief Human Resource Manager was asked to explain what the major reasons for such a perception could be and what could be the key strategies that managers can followed to manage political behavior
The major reasons;
How to manage political behavior;
Controlling information
This is control of how critical information is disseminated to other people. The more critical the information is the fewer people should have it, and this will in return lead to a stronger political power
Controlling lines of communication
People who have some control over lines of communication can yield considerable political power
Controlling agenda
For example, a person who is controlling a meeting"s agenda, may put a certain issue at the end of the list to avoid its discussion.
Using outside experts
Consultants know who is paying them and even honest consultants are likely to give opinions consistent with those of their employer. Hence, hiring an outside consultant can be a clever political move.
Game playing
It involves people doing something insincere, but not outright illegal or unethical to gain political ends. :
Image building
Creating a positive impression reflected by appearance, personality, and style. Factors that enhance a preferred image are; honesty, sociable, being attractive, and loyal organizational interests.
Building coalitions
It is necessary to have an alliance with the right people.
