What are the major technical challenges of project TITANIC-Build and Launch? List and discuss only three most critical ones with relevant but precise analysis supported by supporting arguments.
Firstly, Titanic’s three stockholders of the White Star decided that in building the boat, luxury was their competitive advantage rather than speed. Bruce Ismay, JP Morgana, and White Star Chairman Lord Pirrie focused on competing against Cunard, their business rival (International Project Management Association, 2014). These stakeholders had conflicting priorities that resulted in a scope creep.
Secondly, while the key driver for the initial design of the ships was safety and technology, the misinterpretation of the idea through uncontrolled media communications leads the public to hold a misconception that it was unsinkable. Technicians did design reviews to cater to the public imagery of the recreation that compromised safety, including lowering the number of lifeboats to enhance the view of 1st class customers and lowering Titanic’s ultimate length to attain a bigger dining room (International Project Management Association, 2014). These changes were made, but their implications were not tested.
Thirdly, Titanic's design was modified using flawed lessons from The Olympic to lower the number of lifeboats further and maximize accommodation of the 1st class, alongside extra reinforcement to a lower vibration. According to the International Project Management Association (2014), when the Chief Designer, Carlisle, raised the lifeboats issue, his concerns were avoided by the key stakeholders.
