Klaus had extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation involves doing something good for future rewards, Having been brought up in a christian family and witnessed the annihilation of his family by the Nazis , Klaus deeply hated war. The project he was undertaking as a physicist Manhattan project was aimed to make a bomb for US and Britain. Klaus feared this move was catastrophic since one country would have access to dangerous weapons and therefore might misuse them which would bring about war. To avoid this, Klaus decided to give the secrets of the Manhattan project to the USSR as he thought this move would avoid the prospect of another world war.
