On 6 September 2021, A, who is in Cape Town, telephones B, who is in Johannesburg, to offer him the opportunity of partnering with him in a lucrative contract. A tells B to write a letter of response and post the letter to A’s Cape Town address. On 7 September 2021, B writes a letter of acceptance for A’s offer and posts the letter to A, as instructed. On the day he posts the letter, the Postal and Telecommunications Union calls for an immediate unprotected nationwide strike that cripples the operations and services of the Post Office. On 13 September 2021, B calls A to find out when the contract will start. A tells him that he never received a letter of acceptance from B, so he assumed B was not interested and, therefore, offered the opportunity to someone who accepted it. A noted that, unfortunately, there was nothing he could do to help B.
