Ubuntu is an African philosophy that means "humanity." The philosophy implies to the belief in a universal humankind connection that encourages sharing with other societal members consequently improving their status in the community. The philosophy in its primary sense denotes humanity and morality in the society. Thus, the criminal justice system functionaries can incorporate the principle of Ubuntu by treating everyone in the society equally and courteously regardless of their social standing, race, religion, gender or sexuality. Moreover, the criminal justice can introduce initiatives focused on rehabilitation and redemption of offenders or incarcerated criminals indulged in redeemable offences to instill a sense of reconciliation, understanding and cooperation in the society as a way of mitigating crime. The above would promote a sense of belonging, mutual understanding and universal respect between societal members.
