The responsibilities of the SAPS include to preventing and combating crime that may threaten the safety and security of any community, investigate any crimes threatening the safety and security of any community; ensuring that offenders are brought to justice, and participating in efforts to address the causes of crime.
The judicial authority in South Africa is vested in the courts, which are independent and subject only to the Constitution and the law. No person or organ of State may interfere with the functioning of the courts, and an order or decision of a court binds all organs of State and people to whom it applies.
The Correctional Services Act defines the purpose of the department and contributes towards maintaining and protecting a just, peaceful and safe society by detaining all prisoners in safe custody whilst ensuring that their human dignity is respected.
