Hate crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals refers to the criminal offences motivated by prejudice or hate that target the victim’s gender identity or sexual orientation. Due to the proliferation of hate crimes against LGBT persons, police and civil society institutions are in the forefront within the criminal justice system in fighting such anti-LGBT prejudice. They have also been embedded in the state’s toolkit for addressing such bigotry. Finally, many countries have also enacted specific laws intended to enhance the penalties against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes.
