Street-ism phenomena is both an escalating and alarming global challenge representing various pressing issues concerning child welfare. An ever swelling number of children live in the streets especially in developing nations with child protection advocates and activists noting an increase over the last decade.
Some of the contributory factors to the influx include:
a. Physical abuse, maltreatment or violence at their homes that contributes to runaway children
b. Poverty
c. Diseases or epidemics such as HIV/AIDS that leaves a number of children orphaned
d. Abandonment and negligence by their guardians
e. Street families
f. Family disruptions or conflicts
g. Drug abuse and prostitution for money especially if from low income families facing economic hardships
