German unification was enforced by the idea of having a 'smaller' Germany. The major events that transpired included; United States’ Recognition of the Federal German Republic in 1848, United States’ Recognition of the North German Union in 1867, United States’ Recognition of the German Empire and Establishment of Diplomatic Relations in 1871, Termination of Relations During the First World War in 1917, and U.S. Declaration of War Against Imperial Germany in 1917.
