In the late half of the nineteenth century, a growing number of Chinese migrated to Australia escaping civil disorder, as well as, famine and floods in China. Most of them were attracted by the gold discovery in Australia. In 1861, the China-born population took 3.4 percent of the total number of Australians, so it was considered to be the second largest immigrant group after immigrants from the British Isles.
