At the scene of a crime, a police officer questions witnesses about the details of a holdup. The officer suspects that some of the witnesses are connected with the crime. How does Miranda decisions apply in such an instance?
Miranda v. Arizona, the Supreme Court's judgment, dealt with four different cases regarding detention interrogation techniques. In any of these instances, the accused was interrogated in a chamber cut off from the outside world by police officers, detectives, or a state's attorney. In none of these situations, the defendant was given a complete and effective notification of his rights before being interrogated. The interrogation resulted in oral admissions in all four cases and signed confessions in three of them, which were admissible in court.
