One of the founding principles of the United States that Americans cherish is the right to freedom of speech enshrined in the First Amendment of the constitution, freedom of speech grants all Americans the liberty to criticize the government and speak their minds without fear of being censored or persecuted. The Ancient Greeks were the first pioneers of free speech as a democratic principle. The first Amendment did not specify exactly what freedom of speech meant and what should be protected by the law. In Texas V Johnson in 1990, the US Supreme Cort reversed the a conviction by the Texas court that Johnson had broken the law by burning the flag as this was a symbolic speech.
