Following the drop in profitability of the slave trade and diminishing gold in Portugal, the Portuguese nation decided to expand its industrial revolution into Africa. The motivation for Portuguese imperialism was based on economic, political, and social factors. Portuguese imperialism begins with the desire for king John 1 to gain access to African sacred raw materials such as gold in west Africa and create new markets to trade their products such as silks, spices, and other luxuries products (stuchtey 2017). Politically, the Portuguese were pushed into African to become more powerful than other nations and dominate them. Furthermore, Portuguese imperialism was motivated by the intention to obtain new territories and gain their natural resources thus increasing profitability and money circulation in Portugal.
