The artist uses traditional art techniques to build the tone for Yiddish poet Moses Schulstein's mourning poem. Millions of people were murdered in the camps, and looting on an unimaginable scale occurred. All of the victims' belongings were used, either for the culprits' personal gain or for redistribution among the German population. Perspective, foreshortening, three-dimensional shading, and other spatial indications are some of the techniques used to create the illusion of depth.
