Actually the situation of the Church during Rizal’s time was different from the Church of today.

Of course, before Catholic Church in the Philippines was not supervised directly by the Pope of Rome but by the King of Spain through his Patronato Real, and most of the priests and clergy were Spaniards. The situation of the Catholic Church in the Philippines is different today compared to before, most of the Catholic Bishops and priests are Filipinos, and there are also Filipino Cardinals in the Church and Apostolic Nuncios, the result of Pope Leo XIII’s Apostolic Constitution “Quae Mari Sinico” allowing the natives to be promoted to the higher position in the Church.

Even if we read Rizal today and his criticism of the Church in his time, we might learn from that but the situation is already different.
