The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a symbol of America's honor and acknowledgement of the men and women who fought in the Vietnam War and gave their lives in the process. The names of more than 58,000 men and women who died or went missing are inscribed on the black granite walls.A nationwide competition was held to choose the memorial's design. The jury chose Yale architectural student Maya Lin's design from over 1,400 proposals. On Veterans Day in 1982, the Memorial Wall was dedicated. Each of the 'v' shape's walls is made up of 70 individual panels.
