History acts as a foundation for knowing occurrences of the past and assist in dealing with them in case they happen in future. It helps to understand the origin of the society and thus knowing our origin. Through history, one is able to understand the Philippine society, their culture, and identity.

Specifically for identity, history helps us get the sense of identity.  History helps people develop a sense of their collective past. Past events have made Philippines what they are today. Thus, the main role history plays in the study of Philippines as identity is that it helps them to know where they have come from and they identify themselves as a group.
