Early Christian churches were against theatre and opposed the paganism and debauchery associated with it. considering the perception of theatre, which was seen as evil, the church never wanted it abolished but with the collapse of the roman empire, the church continued to spread and become a dominant force. Hence, as a result, church leaders began to see drama as beneficial and striping its pagan and worldly trappings and consequently become a powerful vehicle for the Christian faith. Using theatres to cultivate moral values and encourage Christian living and therefore benefiting in the process, such as theatre in Edinburgh.
