‘Why was there an escalation of political conflict in South Africa after 1948, culminating in the adoption of political violence by the liberation movements in 1960-61?’
From the start of 1948, following the general election, the governing party of South Africa started the implementation of apartheid or racial segregation. After the general elections that occurred in 1948, the National Party won the elections and started implementing the apartheid. This was aimed to increase the economic and political control of the White minority in South Africa. In 1950, the Suppression of Communism was introduced. However, liberation movements had taken another posture which was mainly spelled out in the Program of Action. In 1952, the Colored Indians and the Blacks came together against the Whites and their unjust laws. There were various forms of unrest towards the apartheid measures that followed later.
