The period from the Constitutional Convention to the Election of 1800 was characterized by conflicts that peaked during the elections where federalists and democrat-republicans attacked one another based on differing political ideologies. The federalists were of the notion that the democrat-republicans wanted to destabilize the government by opting for what they termed as a "weak" system. On the other hand, the democrat-republicans charged the federalists of usurping much of the power from the states in order to create an aristocratic system that threatened democracy. These perceived differences were based on mutual suspicions and animosity between the major political outfits prior to the Election of 1800.
