Account for the crossing of Cape Bojador and the Spanish explorations that ensued
during the Age of Discovery.
The Spaniards faced the prospect of crossing the continental coast near the Canary Islands into the wrong hands, which could potentially endanger the security of the archipelago, freedom of navigation and fishing. Therefore, as a preventive measure, in December 1884, the Spaniards declared the coastline from Cape Cap Blanc in the south to Cape Boоador, where the city of Boujdour is now located, in the north, as their zone of competence. This area was also called Rio de Ogo by Portuguese sailors.
