In the epigraph for Chapter 1, Chris states in  a postcard dated April 27, 1992 to Wayne Westerfield…”I now walk into the wild.”  In Chapter 1, he tells Jim Gallien, “ I don’t want to know what time it is.  I don’t want to know what day it is or where I am.  None of that matters.”  Write about the quotes and/or your assessment of Chris McCandless so far? Robert Service (1874-1958) was a poet who wrote mainly about Alaska. In one of his poems, “The Spell of the Yukon,” he writes the following lines: 

There’s a land where the mountains are nameless,  And the rivers all run God knows where;  There are lives that are erring and aimless,  And deaths that just hang by a hair;  There are hardships that nobody reckons; There are valleys unpeopled and still; There’s a land—oh, it beckons and beckons, And I want to go back—and I will.   

Using Service’s poem as a source, create a person you think would be attracted to Alaska. List the person’s characteristics (for example, profession, age, gender, family background).   

To cross the Rubicon means to make a decision or take a step that commits one to a specific course of action from which there is no turning back...a point of no return.  Write about an experience that you would deem “crossing your Rubicon” or reflect on a book or movie where a character "crossed their Rubicon."

 Jon Krakauer quotes one of McCandless’s friends, who said that McCandless “was born into the wrong century.  He was looking for more adventure and freedom than today’s society gives people” (p. 174).  Do you think this is true?
