Answer to Question #317695 in English for Sheza

Question #317695

we discussed various approaches to understanding what motivates human behaviour. Two somewhat similar theories have come out of the psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches. Based on Henry Murray’s work within the psychoanalyticperspective, David McClelland proposed that people have three primary motivations: achievement, affiliation, and power. Using a humanistic framework, Edward Deci and Richard Ryan proposed self-determination theory, also suggesting that people have three basic motivations: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

  • In what ways are the three types of motivations proposed by McClelland similar to those proposed by Deci and Ryan? In what ways are they different?
  • Which theory do you think provides the better explanation for what motivates human behaviour? Why?

  1. Both the models fail to explain individual differences in motivation.
  • Their difference explains motivation in Deci and Ryan, one need emerges only if the previous one is satisfied. But, according to McClelland's theory, the specified needs can appear collectively.
  1. Maslow theory of needs explains best human behavior since if some of these needs are not met, we may be unable to progress and meet our needs.
