Small-group instruction, both teacher-led and peer-led, should be used more frequently.
Provide one-on-one instruction that is brief yet purposeful and intensive, focusing on the remediation of specific skills.
Make excellent use of praise.
Establish explicit expectations for crucial elements of the school day, such as transitions, group and individual work, homework, signaling for teacher attention, and restroom use, among other things. Take time every now and then to consider whether any portions of these routines should be changed—whether for the entire class or for one or more specific individuals.
