Guy Montag, a thirty-year-old fireman in the twenty-fourth century (remember, the novel was written in the early 1950s), is introduced in the first half of Fahrenheit 451. "It was a delight to burn," Montag says. All books were required to be burned by the authorities. Montag begins as a disgruntled but largely contented fireman, but as he learns the cost of a world without books, he grows progressively disenchanted with his society.
