Chapter 5-6
Irony: List one example of each type of irony – verbal, situational, and dramatic. < List one example of each type of irony from Chapters 5 and 6.
Situational irony: in chapter 5, there is verbal irony behind the "sign from the world of grownups". The sign is indeed a grownup, a dead one. The boys discover that a pilot is hanging by his parachute from a tree just as dead as a doornail.
Verbal irony: there is verbal irony in the conversation at the end of chapter 5 because the boys speak about the parents in a way that seems like they are trying to show the parents as perfect. The ironic thing that should not be happening when they were giving up is wanting their families to be there.
Dramatic irony: In chapter 5, there is use of dramatic irony where the boys discuss the identity of the beast. Only Simon knows the true nature of the beast, and the reader is aware that the other boys do not know its identity.
